In traditional Chinese medicine, this formula is used to clear heat, expel toxins, and release wind-heat from the exterior. It is suitable for the early stage of wind-heat colds, presenting with sore throat, mild cough, bitter taste in the mouth, heavy limbs, yellow urine, and constipation. It is commonly used for what TCM describes as wind-heat pathogens moving from the exterior to the interior—when external heat has not been resolved and begins to affect internal organs, leading to fever, throat discomfort, and sluggish elimination. Compared to Niu Huang Jie Du Wan, this formula is better suited for the early stage, when heat is not yet intense, focusing on releasing the exterior and clearing mild internal heat. Niu Huang Jie Du Wan, on the other hand, targets more developed internal fire and provides stronger detoxification.
